best affordable soil
best affordable soil
I'm setting up a planted tank with some fish, but I'm having trouble deciding on the soil. I came across Tropica soil, which seems great because it reabsorbs nutrients from the water, meaning I wouldn't need to replace it for ages. However, the price is a bit steep at £37 for 7kg, and I'd need a lot more - around 15-20kg. I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that offer similar benefits, or if I should just bite the bullet and go with Tropica. Also, do I need to get any concentrates or other additives to go with the soil?
Re: best affordable soil
I'm no expert on plants and soils, but I thought I'd share some info that might be helpful. I've come across a few articles that discuss the best substrates for planted tanks - you can find them here: Best substrates for planted tanks, and also Best planted tanks substrates.
Re: best affordable soil
I'm not convinced by the benefits of plant soils, and some can be detrimental to fish, in my opinion. Although, I must admit I haven't tried them all. If your priority is the well-being of your fish, as opposed to creating an aquatic garden, I'd recommend an inert substrate - it's simpler and safer. There's less that can go wrong.
I've had good results using play sand in my tanks. Plants thrive in it, and it's perfectly safe for my fish. The natural look is a bonus, and it's very affordable. I supplement with a comprehensive liquid fertilizer once a week, which is necessary for floating plants or those not rooted in the substrate, regardless of the type of substrate used. For larger plants like swords, I also use substrate tabs.
