Easy care plants with large leaves

Four years of intense water plant culture has led me to one key takeaway: the idea that's stuck with me - the geneflake concept. It's pretty straightforward, most large-leafed aquarium plants are a breeze to care for, whereas the smaller-leafed ones can be a real challenge. I mean, think about it, swords, Java ferns, and Anubias are all relatively easy to keep. On the other hand, plants like Monte Carlo and those tiny-leafed Rotala varieties are a different story altogether - almost impossible to keep without CO2 or extremely difficult. So, my advice is simple: go for the bigger-leaved plants.

I've had pretty good luck with all plants, but those tiny leaved ones always seem to get munched on by something - probably my harlequin rasboras.

Nomaphila stricta is another great option for a large leaf plant. It's got really nice big leaves, definitely worth considering if you're looking for something easy to care for.

Large leafed plants have another advantage - they're rarely completely devoured. I've seen those small leafed stem plants, and they just get shredded, like a salad, especially by those Rainbow fish.

I think some of those plants are just too appetizing for Rainbow fish and Barbs like Roselines - they won't stand a chance. And then there's Moss - yes, it's growable, but is it really that easy? I'm not convinced. On the other hand, I do agree that larger Crypt leaves make for a hardier, easier-to-grow plant. Swords are another great option, and if you ask me, Jungle Val is the easiest of the Vals - big leaves, low maintenance.

I've got a thing for Banana Plants, they're just not into me. Still, I keep bringing them home, only to watch them wither away - it's a never-ending cycle.

Most of my plants are the large leaved type, that's what I've found. Large leaved plants just seem to work out better for me. I did have a good run with Pearlweed, it was an exception to the rule, but I ended up getting rid of it all. Too much maintenance was needed, and the roots just couldn't keep up as the plant got bigger - it was like watching a balloon float away.
