Choosing the right snail for a planted tank

Mystery snails for me, personally. Ramshorns are nice but you'll notice jelly blobs all over the place. Nerites aren't a bad choice either, just be prepared for white eggs everywhere - they're quite a pain to clean up.

Zebra Nerite snails are pretty cool in my opinion. They're not like some other snails, breeding like crazy in freshwater. They grow to a decent size, about the size of your thumbnail, and they're brown with yellow stripes. They do cost a bit, but if you keep the tank clean, they'll stick around for a while.

I'm quite fond of apple mystery snails, personally. They're fast growers, and if you're into that sort of thing, they come in a wide variety of colours.

What's the tank size you're working with? I'm a fan of mystery snails, they've got so much character. My rule of thumb is one per 5 gallons - so a single snail in a 5g tank, or two in a 10g tank. But honestly, they're happy to live alone if you only want one. They grow to a nice size too, roughly golf ball-sized, or a bit bigger. I also have ramshorn and bladder snails in my tanks, and while they're cool, they do breed pretty quickly.

I'm curious about apple snails and plants - do they get along? Also, what's the reason behind them being banned in some places, I recall reading that somewhere.

I was looking to get one and the guy I spoke to told me they're actually more carnivorous, so I'd need to make sure to give them prawn and mussel to eat...

The guy I spoke to said they're more carnivorous and I'd need to feed them stuff like prawn and mussel. I just give mine algae wafers and blanched veg a couple of times a week, they probably pick up leftover brine shrimp and daphnia as well.

What's your tank size and other inhabitants? I personally like ramshorn snails, but the suggestions here are great. Pond snails can be nice too. It really depends on what you're after.
