Plant the rice in a shallow container first, then transfer it to the tank when it's big enough. Once the rice is established and the water level is suitable, you can introduce fish to the tank.

My tank's already home to some finned friends, so I'm not sure they'd appreciate a drastic change like that.

I'd love to start fresh, but my tank's already home to a bunch of finned friends - they might not appreciate a complete overhaul. Guess I'm stuck with transplanting my rice into the tank once it's big enough.
