Just got some salvinia for my 75g and scored it for $2, the plants were struggling in a plastic bowl at the store. This shop was an hour away and by far the biggest I've been to. Got home, settled my bag of fish and was about to prep the salvinia when I found a ton of tiny black bugs, all the same type, smaller than a wheat seed. Are these guys safe for my tank or a threat? Will they die off or is my salvinia useless?
I've got some plants at the bottom of the tank but this is my first time with floaters. My tank's got:
- 2 golden gouramis
- 1 red tail shark
- 4 Denison barbs
- 1 clown pleco
- 1 ghost shrimp + 12 being acclimated
- 3 yoyo loaches being acclimated (know they'll eat the ghost shrimp eventually, but they're small for now)
I've got an empty 10g I'm cleaning out, should take a few hours. Thinking of keeping the yoyo loaches in there for quarantine, but that means they'll be in the bag longer...
Are there bugs in new aquatic plants?
Re: Are there bugs in new aquatic plants?
Hey Vagoda, I'd be super cautious with those tiny bugs. If I were you, I'd avoid adding anything to the tank that could cause issues, especially since it's already established. You never know what you're getting into unless you're 100% sure what they are. Hope those yoyo loaches settle in smoothly for you, by the way.Vagoda wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 5:07 am Just got some salvinia for my 75g and scored it for $2, the plants were struggling in a plastic bowl at the store. Re: Are there bugs in new aquatic plants?
I'm glad you're being cautious with your tank. I still think it's best to avoid adding anything that could cause issues, especially since you mentioned your tank is established. If you're unsure about the bugs, it's probably safer to err on the side of caution. I'm not familiar with the specific type of bugs you're talking about, but if you don't know what they are or where they came from, it's best to avoid adding them to your tank. Glad to hear your loaches are doing well, by the way.
Re: Are there bugs in new aquatic plants?
Dip in hydrogen peroxide and then rinse - that's what I'd do with the salvinia to get rid of those tiny bugs.

I'm still unsure about these tiny bugs on my salvinia, any idea what they are?
