A spider web on my wood?

Post by voltix »

Noticed something weird on my wood - it's got this white stuff growing on it. Should I be concerned? Also, I posted an update on my other plants.

It's nothing to be concerned about, happens to every piece of wood I've added to my tank. I'm pretty sure it's related to tannins not being able to oxidize properly, but it's completely fine.

it's nothing to worry about, that stuff usually disappears pretty quickly, you'll probably notice it's gone in a couple of weeks.

I'm still a bit unsure, should I just let it be or get rid of it? I did pre-soak it in a cup for 3 weeks before adding it to the tank, mainly to prevent any colour changes in my water.

I took a pretty aggressive approach with my spider wood - boiled it thoroughly, then soaked it for days to leach out as many tannins as possible. Despite that, I still ended up with the same issue you're experiencing now. From what I've gathered, it's essentially just the remaining organic material in the wood being released. Mine took about two weeks to clear up. My aquatic life - fish, shrimp, and snail - seemed to thoroughly enjoy picking at it, which was a nice bonus. The appearance, however, was quite off-putting.

It's honestly not a concern, just let it be.

It's likely fungus, typically not a cause for concern. When you do a water change, just aim your siphon hose at it and it'll get sucked out.
