Creating a film on wood

Post by florapace »

I can see these tiny white worms moving around on the driftwood, and I'm really hoping they're detritus worms, but there are also these other tiny white specks floating around - what are those? Then there's this cottony white film all over the driftwood, I have no idea what that is.

I only have shrimp in this tank, so I'm stumped.

Don't stress about it, it's just a funky fungus growth that shows up on new wood in aquariums. Your shrimp might even munch on it, or you can try siphoning it out during your next water change.

It's probably that fungus thing that grows on new wood in aquariums. Your shrimp might eat it or you can try to get rid of it during water change.

I'm cool with them eating it, though. I added a video link - could you check if those white worms might be a parasite issue?

Sorry about the link, can you re-share? That fungus on the driftwood might be a concern - some types can be toxic to shrimp. I'd recommend removing the wood, hosing off the fungus, and then putting it back in the tank to be safe.

I boiled the driftwood before adding it to the tank, so I'm curious if it's still possible for that toxic film to grow back.

Thought I'd actually deleted this thread, reposted in shrimp section since it's worm-related too...

Honestly, that stuff usually isn't a big deal. If you're still worried, just take it out and give it a quick scrub.
