When I got those balloon rams and mollies, the pet store said they're just regular rams and mollies, so I bought 'em. I had no idea till last month.coltin wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 1:06 amThe weirdly shaped fish like those balloon mollies, they're basically genetic mutations. Normal fish are bred and produce heaps of young. In the wild, the deformed ones would normally get eaten because they can't swim as well or their color makes them more visible. What happens is, instead of culling these fish when they're first noticed, breeders keep the deformed young and grow them up. Then they breed the deformed fish to encourage the deformity, which is how we end up with these weirdly shaped fish.

I'd take mutated fish over genetically modified ones any day, just to clarify I'm not a fan of balloons and such. It's really sad, fish are already amazing, pretty, and cool to look at, plus there are tons of bright and colorful varieties out there that don't need modification.
