Mixing wild and bred discus

Post by Jurn »

I've got 17 of Kenny's discus doing great. Found a local guy selling a 5.5" wild discus and I'm wondering if it's safe to mix with my current stock. I'd definitely quarantine for 6-8 weeks, but has anyone else successfully combined the two strains? Would love to hear any advice from those who've done it before.

In my experience, discus are discus - the differences aren't drastic. I've successfully mixed wild and domestic discus, and it's possible you've already got some wild crosses in the 17 you bought from Kenny. To minimize potential issues, I'd ask the seller about the food, water temperature, and pH they've kept the wild discus in. The age of the fish is also crucial - is it a direct import or a domestic-bred F1 or later generation? The uncertainty surrounding the age of direct imports gives me pause.

I think it's doable. After a 4-6 week quarantine, try introducing one of your least favorite Kenny's discus to the wild discus tank. Observe them for 2-4 weeks and see how it goes. If everything works out, you can then gradually introduce them to your main tank. What's the size of your main tank, by the way? How long have you had your Kenny's discus, and how long has the seller had the wild discus?

I’d say it can be done. Once you’ve qt them for 4-6 weeks take your least favorite Kenny’s and add it to the wild tank. Give them 2-4 weeks and see what happens. If all goes good add slowly to main tank. How big is your main tank? How long have you had your Kenny’s and how long has the other guy had his wilds?

My setup's 180 gal with a 60 gal sump and 75 gal aquaponics. Had Kenny's for 6 months now. Seller claims he's had the wild for a year. I like your approach, seems like a solid plan. If it doesn't work out, guess I'll be selling the wild again - that'll be a hassle.

What's the origin of the wild discus - are they direct imports or have they been bred domestically? Are they a specific strain like Heckel, Alenquer, or Tefe?

Sounds like a great setup. What size are the wild discus? Any pics of them?
