New Tank Mates?

Post by Limey »

I've got a 1 year old Discus tank, 10 discus, a school of rummy nose/cardinal tetras, 6 corys, and a BN pleco. Always been a fan of congo tetras. My tank's a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft with a 20 gal wet/dry sump. I know congos are fast swimmers and will eat up FDBW, but I'm curious - has anyone kept congos with discus? How's it working out? My tank's at 82F and I do 60% water changes every 3 days or so.

I've had experience with both Congo tetras and discus, just not in the same tank.
Congos do require a school of at least six, and they definitely prefer a planted environment. They grow larger than your cardinal and rummy nose tetras, and their activity level is significantly higher. I think the discus might find their energetic behavior overwhelming and stressful. Additionally, Congos aren't too fond of warmer temperatures - they can survive at 82F, but they really thrive at 75-76F.
If I were in your shoes, I'd consider adding a few more cardinals or rummy nose tetras instead of Congos.
However, if you're set on keeping Congos, it might be worth setting up a separate tank specifically for them - a 55 or 75 gallon would be ideal. A well-planted tank with a nice school of Congos, some smaller tetras, and a few catfish can be truly stunning.

I've had experience with both Discus and Congo tetras, and I gotta say, they don't quite mix well. The Congo tetras' high energy can be overwhelming for the Discus. Considering your tank setup and the Discus' gentle nature, I think a school of peaceful Rams would be a great addition. German and Dutch Rams, in particular, are known for their calm demeanor and vibrant colors. Plus, they originated from the same South American waters as the Discus, so they'd be a great fit.
