still waiting for help with my item in the bag

Post by sunset4 »

I just picked up a red coris wrasse from my LFS and they claimed it's reef safe - I'm not buying it. I've got a thriving 125-gallon reef tank with a few hermits, a blood shrimp, a naso tang, a copperband butterfly, a flame angel, a bicolor pseudochromis, and a mandarin. The hermits are just for kicks, since I don't have any algae or other issues. I'm wondering if there's any way I can make this wrasse work in my tank.

If it's small I suppose it could go in the tank, but these fish can grow up to a foot long, and let's be honest, all wrasses have a thing for shrimp. The copperband and pseudochromis might not be too fussed, but the rest of your tankmates, especially the blood shrimp, might be in for a rough ride. Also, be prepared for the wrasse to bury itself and disappear for a week or so - it's just what they do.

When the coris grows, it's possible it might go after the blood shrimp, but it's just as likely it won't, since cleaner shrimp introduced before predators usually coexist just fine. I'd much rather have the wrasse, personally - they're great fish, and a better choice than the shrimp or the stars it preys on.

In my opinion, the wrasse is a great addition to your tank.

I decided to take the coris wrasse back and opted for a filament flasher wrasse instead - I'm really digging the colors and that fin on top is pretty sweet. I might give the coris another shot in the future, but for now I'm focused on setting up my new 260 gallon reef tank - currently building the stand and waiting for my new MH lights to arrive.

Thanks for the input and suggestions, appreciate it.
