I've been re-evaluating my tank's direction, and I think I want to replace my current middle-sized fish, like the zebra danios and white clouds, with peaceful, smaller fish that'll interact with the landscape and not harm the platy fry.
I'm still planning on keeping the Cherry shrimp, otos, and probably Pygmy Cories. I'm also considering Juliis, but I haven't made up my mind yet.
What I've realized is that I wasn't getting much enjoyment from watching the danios swim, since they just zoom around without really exploring their environment. On the other hand, the platy fry and Pygmy Cories seem to really interact with the tank's layout, especially in the more planted areas.
I've heard that some nano fish, like scarlet badis, might not be compatible with platies due to aggression. However, my platies have been pretty laid-back, mostly ignoring the shrimp and Cories.
I'm looking at Pygmy cories, chili rasboras, and scarlet badis as potential new additions. The badis are particularly interesting to me because of their territorial behavior, but I'm hesitant due to concerns about feeding them.

Re: choosing peaceful nano fish to keep with platys
I've been looking into some alternatives and I think dwarf red coral platys could be a nice fit - they're peaceful and pretty small. Celestial pearl danios might be another option, I've heard they're pretty chill and could work well with the platy fry. Also, have you considered dwarf emerald rasboras?jackgulf wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 4:11 am I've been re-evaluating my tank's direction, and I think I want to replace my current middle-sized fish, like the zebra danios and white clouds, with peaceful, smaller fish that'll interact with the landscape and not harm the platy fry.

I've had great experiences with t.hengeli, or Hengels rasboras - they're lovely to watch, especially when they school together.
Another option to consider, depending on your water parameters, is the beckfordi pencilfish; their small mouth size is a plus, but I'm not sure offhand if they'd be a good fit size-wise.

Re: choosing peaceful nano fish to keep with platys
I'm leaning towards chili rasboras now. While the scarlet badis are still fascinating to me, I think they'd thrive in a tank specifically set up for them, given their unique needs.
I recently stumbled upon the corydoras Habrosus, or the "Salt and Pepper Cory," which caught my attention. They're closely related to pygmy cories, but have a distinctive speckled pattern and grow slightly larger, reaching 1.3 inches. I'd love to add some to my tank if I can find them available.

Re: choosing peaceful nano fish to keep with platys
I've been considering water parameters and I think I need to reconsider my choice of chili rasboras, given that I have platies which are hard water fish. Chili rasboras and Badis, for instance, are very soft water fish, which might not be the best fit for my tank.
Also, I've been looking into the corydoras Habrosus, but I've come across some conflicting information. Apparently, the name "Salt and Pepper Cory" can refer to Corydoras paleatus, which isn't a dwarf Cory like I initially thought. I'd hate for there to be confusion when trying to find the right fish for my tank.

Back to the drawing board, I guess. I recall researching them before and deciding against them.graye wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 8:41 am I've been considering water parameters and I think I need to reconsider my choice of chili rasboras, given that I have platies which are hard water fish. Re: choosing peaceful nano fish to keep with platys
Finding tankmates that fit Platy water parameters is proving to be quite the challenge. I'm really struggling to find options that align with my existing water conditions.

Finding tankmates that fit with my platy's water parameters is proving to be quite a challenge. I'm starting to think I might have to settle for something that's not exactly what I had in mind, or keep searching for that perfect match.
Re: choosing peaceful nano fish to keep with platys
I've also got a setup with a dwarf gourami, a bristlenose pleco, and some ember tetras alongside my platys - it's in a separate tank, but I've found it's working out pretty well.
