Discus Hans - DO they need supa Soft water?

Post by angelic »

I got some info from a local pet shop about Hans Discus - supposedly they need soft water, even though they're captive-bred. I'm not entirely convinced, so I figured I'd ask around. What have you guys experienced with Hans Discus? Do they really need super soft water or is that just not necessary?

I've had my fair share of experience with Hans Discus, and trust me, I know what works. The key to their well-being isn't about the softness of the water, but rather its quality and stability. You see, as long as the water is clean, fully cycled, and stable, your Hans Discus will thrive. The pH level isn't as crucial, as long as it's not excessively high or low. What's important is maintaining a stable environment, and your Discus will adapt just fine.

I think they're misinformed. Hans' discus are actually bred and raised in very hard water in Germany, so I highly doubt they need super soft water.

I'm with elixir on this one. Hans discus can handle most water conditions. I'm pretty sure they mention their discus do well in hard water, it's one of their selling points. Like any discus, clean and stable water is key. When they're small, daily 50% or better water changes will really bring them to life. If you're planning to mix them with other discus, you gotta QT the new fish for 4 weeks, then add a hero fish from your existing tank to the new guys for 2 or more weeks.

Same with Stendker discus - they're born and raised in very hard water, so I'm guessing Hans discus can handle it too.

Don't bother with local fish stores for Hans discus, their quality is often subpar. Instead, go straight to the source - Hams is your best bet. He's been shipping these fish for years and knows what he's doing. You'll get top-notch discus, not some watered-down version from a pet store.

I'm with Shan on this one. Hans discus are pretty hardy when it comes to water conditions. I recall they actually advertise their discus as being adaptable to various water types, including hard water. As with any discus, what's crucial is providing them with clean, fresh water. For young discus, regular water changes of 50% or more can really make a difference in their health and vitality. If you're planning to mix them with other discus, it's a good idea to quarantine the new fish for at least 4 weeks and then introduce a 'hero' fish from the existing tank to the new ones for a couple of weeks or more.

I agree with Shan, imported Discus like Hans need one thing - clean, stable water. Stability is key. Have you tested your tap water for pH swings? Compare it to water that's sat in a bucket with a bubbler for 12 hours. If the pH swing is less than 0.3 between the two, your water is stable and you can use it straight from the tap for water changes. But if it's like mine, with a swing of 0.4 or more, you'll need to age the water. Those constant swings stress the fish and make them sick.

Instead of investing in pH strips or a meter, consider getting your water tested at a local fish store. Simply aerate a water sample overnight and take it, along with a fresh sample, to the store for a pH test. I've found my tap water starts at 8.8 pH, dropping to 7.6 after aeration.

The Flachens seem to thrive in it.

I've found my local fish store will actually do water testing for free, which is pretty convenient.
