And don't freak out if they close up for a day or two after adding 'em. They're just adjusting. My Zoas looked dead for 48 hours, then popped open like nothing happened. Patience is key, my dude.

Yep, Mushrooms are chill as heck. I'd also throw in Green Star Polyps—they're basically indestructible and grow like weeds. Just glue 'em to a rock and let 'em do their thing. My GSP survived a mini-cycle when I was a noob, so they're tough.

I'd say half moon plakets with those gorgeous "Black Orchid" colours. The scales do have a certain sheen to them, reminiscent of dragon scales, but I'm thinking it might just be the lighting or the colour combo playing tricks on me - or maybe it's a new variation, who knows?

To determine the tail type of your betta, try holding a mirror in front of him - this will cause him to flare.
When flared, take a closer look at the edges of his tail.
If they're 180 degrees apart, it's likely a half moon.
More than 180 degrees, and it's an over half moon.

I can see why you'd think that now, the fluxeon scale does seem to fit. I was under the impression black orchid was just a color description, not an actual type. Black orchid fluxeon could be a possibility, and I have to ...

identifying my betta's breed

Just brought home this little black orchid guy and he's chillin' in a temp tank for now - still got about 2 weeks to go before it's fully cycled.
No fin type or anything was specified, just 'black orchid', so I'm kinda curious - anyone have any idea what kind he might be?
Looks pretty young to me ...
