Re: Java fern producing small brown offshoots: new plants or a cause for concern?

Just keep the Java Fern consistently moist and it'll thrive, creating a lush environment in no time. It's not as aggressive as water wisteria, but it develops into a beautiful, full bush surprisingly quickly. I've successfully spread it across all my tanks, originating from a single plant I ...

Re: Achieving stable water conditions in small aquariums

There's a Jewel Cichlid, Kribensis, Peacock Cichlid, Convict Cichlid, Common Pleco and a Rainbow Shark in the 75 gallon. I'm hoping they'll all get along, but we'll see. The Dempsey's still small, so he'll grow up with these other fish. They won't have a choice, and there are plenty of hiding places ...

Re: Achieving stable water conditions in small aquariums

He's headed back to my 75 gallon once I get that tank sorted. I got him when he was tiny, and he did great in there at first - lots of hiding spots and all that. Re: Achieving stable water conditions in small aquariums

My 10-gallon was a nightmare to keep stable when it was unplanted. Upgrading to my 38-gallon was a game-changer. Recently, I busted out the 10-gallon again - about 6 months ago - for my electric blue Jack Dempsey. Poor guy got beat up in the 75-gallon, so I set up the smaller tank as a recovery ...

Re: introducing african cichlids in my aquarium

You're on the right track with the fin thing. Typically, males have that extended fin with spots, and the females have shorter fins with no spots. If you pay close attention, you'll notice the ones with the most spots on that fin tend to be the alphas in the tank.

Re: introducing african cichlids in my aquarium

Determining the sex of African cichlids can be done by looking at their anal fin. Typically, males have spots or dots on their anal fin, while females have a shorter anal fin without these spots.

Re: Choosing the right substrate

I'd say sand can work, but it really depends on the type of fish you're planning to keep - some of them just love digging and can cause a mess. For example, if you're going to have some active swimmers or burrowers, you might want to consider a different substrate.

As for fertilizers, I think it's ...
