Re: breeding discus without losing fry
Anyone tried using a breeding cone? Heard it helps keep the eggs in one spot, makes it easier to move them to the fry tank.

Re: breeding discus without losing fry
Man, Discus fry are finicky little things. I had luck with adding almond leaves for tannins and keeping the tank dimly lit. Also, make sure there's no strong current from the filter. Fry can't swim well at first and get sucked into the filter.

Re: Discus not growing as expected
True about genetics. My first batch was from PetCo, and they never got bigger than 4 inches. Switched to a local breeder, and now my fish are monsters. Also, how often do you clean the filter? A dirty filter can mess with water quality even if params look good.

Re: Discus not growing as expected
I had the same issue last year. Turns out my heater was wonky, temp kept dipping to 80 at night. Got a new one and boom, growth spurt. Also, how's the lighting? Too much can stress 'em out. Mine chill better with dimmer lights, like 6 hours a day max.

Why aren't my plants growing?
I switched to Tropica soil from gravel, and I've got my Aquasky light on for 6 hours a day in my 125l tank. It's well planted but all my plants, even my 53b, have stopped growing. I'm using liquid CO2 daily, so how much of TNC Complete should I dose daily?

Re: Are fish science flakes a good choice?
I usually mix things up with a combination of flake foods, live foods, and frozen foods. Omega One is a good one, and I've also had good results with Almost Natural, Tetramin Tropical, New Life Spectrum, Cobalt, and Ocean Nutrition. For those who want to dig deeper, there's a webpage called ...

Re: A question about color.
I picked up my Astaxanthin powder from KensFish.com - it's been a game-changer. Two bags last a while, in my experience. Discus don't eat much relative to their body size, so the food they do get is pretty concentrated with added color enhancers. I've had similar success ...

I've found that adding Astaxanthin to the cubes really helps bring out the red hues in my discus.

Re: Can plants thrive in fine sand?
My two cents on the matter - I think plants can do alright in fine sand, but personally, I've found that roots tend to have an easier time in slightly coarse sand or gravel. The coarser texture seems to allow for better water flow and oxygenation, which helps prevent those nasty anaerobic pockets ...

Re: Future Discus Setup
I think it's worth mentioning that a thinner substrate layer could work in your favor. Using 1.5-2.0 cm of sand instead of 5.0 cm would make vacuuming easier and prevent gas pockets from forming. This would also give you more water volume for your fish. With multiple daily ...
