Re: setting up a 50g tank with two species

Thanks for your response, Flynest. I'm well aware of the common plec's growth size - didn't know when I bought him, and LSF didn't tell me either. I've actually tried a more natural look with river rocks, each weighing 5 pounds or more, but the weight and management of the system were drawbacks. The ...

setting up a 50g tank with two species

Just thought I'd share some pics of my recent tank upgrade from 29G to 50G. I'm looking for ideas on how to improve the setup. I've got 3 P. Acei and 3 Red Zebras in there now. Turns out the Acei are 2 males and 1 female, and the Red Zebras are all females - the two older ones are definitely the ...

Re: Why are my crypts not growing?

I've had Crypts melt on me before, and they always came back eventually. Just keep doing what you're doing, and don't panic. They'll bounce back when they're ready.

Re: photos of terracotta caves in the aquarium

I used a clear silicone sealant that's aquarium-safe to stack the pots on top of each other, I actually had to cut them in half first using a tile cutter. They seem to really enjoy it but I'm already looking forward to upgrading to a longer, narrower 55-gallon tank to give them more space to swim ...

Re: Is this choice inspired or a recipe for disaster?

I'd recommend dividing your cichlids into smaller groups of the same species, three or so per group would work well. This will help reduce aggression as each group will establish its own territory around a specific cave structure. To minimize aggression, it's a good idea to separate these structures ...

Re: Mbuna species and sex identification help

Big Texx, I appreciate your input on my pet's ID. Based on your observation of pics #2 and #3, I was thinking along the same lines - a male Cynotilapia afra. As for behavior, I'd say my pet is passively aggressive and I've noticed some changes lately.

It's about 5.5 inches now, and I've got it in ...

Mbuna species and sex identification help

Hi Everyone,

I've been patiently waiting for my pet to fully mature before seeking your expertise in identifying it. My pet has grown into a stunning Mbuna, and I'm eager to introduce more of its kind to my collection. After a year of searching, I've had no luck finding an exact match. The closest ...

Re: is my understanding correct?

That's what I initially thought too, but the LFS labels and my own research led me to believe they might be different. After some digging on YouTube, I'm pretty confident the pair are actually Pseudotropheus cyaneorhabdos. The lighter one is female and the darker, bolder one is male. I'm still ...
