Re: Betta tank filter maintenance
Same here, man. Better safe than sorry. Also, if you're rinsing the sponge, give it a gentle squeeze, don't scrub. Those bacteria colonies are delicate little things.

Re: Betta tank filter maintenance
Double sponge's great, gives more surface area for bacteria. Just don't overclean it, or you'll crash your cycle. Learned that the hard way last year, ha.

Re: Betta tank filter maintenance
I usually rinse mine every 4-6 weeks, but it depends on your tank's bio load. If you've got a lot of plants or just one fish, you can probably stretch it. Just use tank water, not tap, to keep the good bacteria.

Is betta glass surfing a sign of fast swimming?
I'm having a bit of a concern and I thought I'd run it by you all. My betta sometimes zooms up and down the sides of her tank at high speed - it's not constant, but it's happened enough to catch my attention. I'm worried she might be bored, despite the tank being pretty decked out with live plants ...

Re: What Causes Color Loss in SPS?
My SPS did the same thing when I switched salts. Are you using the same brand? Some salts have trace elements that SPS love. Also, how often are you feeding? Corals need amino acids and vitamins to keep their colors. I dose Acropower twice a week and see a huge difference.

Re: Is megaselia sp. a suitable live food for betta fish?
I'm not familiar with the larvae you're referring to, but I'm curious about your brine shrimp culture - I've had trouble getting mine to grow past a certain size. I've been using baby brine shrimp eggs, and while they hatch just fine, they never seem to reach a decent size. How did you manage to get ...

Re: Are there daphnia in my tank?
Limiting feedings is key. A betta will eat as much as it can, whenever it can. In an enclosed space like your tank, there's no guarantee she won't catch all the daphnia quickly. You already have her in a spacious tank for a betta, with plenty of live plants and decor to explore. Plus, she gets ...

Re: Are there daphnia in my tank?
You're really thinking about your betta's well-being, and I love that. She's one lucky fish. I think the glass surfing might just be a settling-in thing, so it could resolve itself over time.
I do know that bettas are prone to obesity, so it's great that you're being mindful of her food intake ...

Are there daphnia in my tank?
I've had my female koi betta for a bit now, and she's thriving. I've set up a 20 gallon long with some bladder snails and a bunch of live plants - I'll attach a picture below. The tank's got plenty to explore, so I'm hoping that's enough enrichment for her. She's always on the move, swimming and ...
