Blastomussa wellsi feeding needs
Just picked up a Blastomussa wellsi frag, but I'm not sure what to feed it. My tank's a 40-gallon mixed reef with T5 lighting, nitrates around 5 ppm, and I dose amino acids weekly. What's worked for y'all?

Re: discus tank water testing kits
API Freshwater Master Kit is solid. Used it for years with my 120-gallon planted tank, Discus are thriving. It's accurate and easy to read, just follow the instructions. Also, if nitrates are hitting 20ppm, maybe up your water changes to twice a week, that's what I do.

Re: why discus swim in circles?
Yep, flow's a biggie. Also, how old's your water? Mine did circles when I slacked on changes. Now doing 50% weekly with RO mix, they're chill.

Re: Discus tank water flow guide
The Fluval 407 can be pretty powerful for Discus. I'd recommend reducing the flow rate to about 50%, they prefer calm water. Also, try adding a spray bar to distribute the flow more evenly. What's your substrate? Sand helps buffer the current too.
Spot on. I've got the same setup, and adding a ...

Re: discus aggression during feeding
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try spreading the food and maybe cut back on the beef heart. Appreciate the tips!

discus aggression during feeding
My discus get super aggressive when I feed them, especially with beef heart. They chase each other around the tank and nip fins. Tank is 75 gallons, 6 discus, 2 angelfish, sand substrate, planted with Amazon swords. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Temp at 84F, weekly 50 ...

Re: Discus tank odor problem solver
Rotten egg smell usually means hydrogen sulfide buildup in the substrate. Sand can trap debris and create anaerobic pockets. Try stirring the sand gently during water changes and maybe cut back on the beef heart, it's messy. Also, check if your filter flow is strong enough to circulate the whole ...

Re: why won't my discus pair bond?
Good call on the temp. Also, keep an eye on their behavior after the changes. Subtle shifts can tell you a lot about what's working.

Re: why won't my discus pair bond?
My discus have been in the same tank for months, but they just won't pair up. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrate around 10 ppm. Tank is 75 gallons, temp at 84°F, with a canister filter and sand substrate. They're about 5 inches each, fed twice daily with a mix of flakes, pellets ...
