Re: choosing compatible tankmates for angelfish

I've had my fair share of raising angels, and one thing I've noticed is that their markings tend to stay relatively consistent as they mature. They might change a bit, but not drastically. The real challenge is predicting their adult size - I've had some angels grow quite large, while others remain ...

Re: the steel wool of the plant world

Oregon's got a problem with Marimo algae balls - they're a source of Zebra Mussels, an invasive species here in North America.

creating a raised tub for fish and furry pets

I've finished the raised tub for the laundry room, it's been a long time coming. My goal was to create a tub that's easy to work with while standing, no more straining my back. I can wash my 30-gallon tanks indoors where it's warm, clean off glass covers without them hanging over the kitchen sink ...

Re: Being the sole survivor

My experience with a similar situation was with my first batch of angels - only one made it through. He turned out to be a really nice fish, though.

Re: Help with struggling vallisneria

Not my specialty, but I've had my fair share of Vallis experience. Your plants do appear to be struggling, and I'm inclined to think they might be jungle vals, although it's tough to say for certain. Give them some space and time - if they're healthy, you should start seeing new leaf growth and ...

Re: A concise guide to python programming

Half a thumb up. The siphon's good, and the hose - I've got a 50' one - is really good quality and flexible when needed. Don't use the water filler component myself, gotta pay for water and my septic system doesn't take kindly to extra water. Instead, I fill my tanks from the tap using a garden hose ...

Re: A surprisingly effective solution

Just a heads up, 283 ppm on that tester is an estimate of Total Dissolved Solids based on conductivity. It correlates with general hardness, but it's not a direct measure. With my TDS sensor, I've noticed readings are about 75 ppm higher than general hardness tests. Adding fertilizer seems to make ...

Re: Raising soft water fish in hard water: do i need to use ro water?

I've found that keeping fish outside their normal water hardness can be done, but they rarely thrive and some won't even survive. @bettaMagenta's point about store-bred fish is well-taken - they're usually not in the store long enough for it to make a difference. Sticking to fish that match your ...

Re: help, my friend's betta is rotting

It's been a while since this post was up, and I'm not surprised since we're missing a picture - it's tough to give advice without one. I'm no expert on bettas, but I do know that keeping the tank clean is crucial. I'd focus on that first, and then maybe consider a salt treatment for the fin rot, but ...
