I agree with the advice given, daily 50% water changes are a must until your water parameters are stable. Investing in a test kit is essential to monitor the water conditions.

Your tank's also way too small for African cichlids, unless you're planning an upgrade soon. The fish are likely stressed from the cramped space, making them more prone to illness. I'd recommend researching the minimum tank size requirements for your fish to ensure you can provide them with a ...

Try Ad Konings' Back to Nature series, it's a good starting point. Cichlid Forum also has a comprehensive profile section that lists pretty much all the species, might be worth checking out.

The one on the left, I'm pretty sure that's an auratus. The others, not so sure - might be crossbreeds. That yellow one's got me stumped. What else is in the tank with them, btw?

So if you chose certain shell dwellers, even with just a pair, they'd still probably eat the young. But if you went with similis and other tankmates, a few of the fry would keep surviving and your colony would build up over time.

If you're looking for colourful multies, there's only one that really stands out, but similis are worth considering too - they're quite similar and pretty nice to watch. The thing with Tanganikan fish is, their personalities more than make up for their lack of colour.

Yeah, that's how you do it, different territories in different areas.
All the fish will breed but proper colonies will come from multies, I think. Also, have a look at similes, they do the same thing.

The oceliatus you mentioned aren't exactly colony fish, so you wouldn't be able to keep a large group.
