Re: finding suitable tankmates for betta
To be honest, it's unkind to put a male Betta in with any other fish, regardless of who's there first. As you and others have noted, the Betta can be either the aggressor or the victim. essjay made a valid point, a Betta that may initially seem to tolerate other fish can turn overnight into a real ...

Re: Are my betta fish sick?
I strongly recommend doing a 75% water change daily for a week, using de-chlorinated water, and vacuuming the gravel during this process. When you do this, rinse the filter cartridges or sponges in the water you took out – just don't replace them yet. Clean, fresh water is the best thing you can ...

Re: is ammonia present in my tap water
I think your tap water might have chloramine in it, and that's what Prime is taking care of. It's possible that's what's showing up as an ammonia reading. I've seen some people mention that certain batches of API ammonia tests can give false positives around 0.25-0.5ppm.

Re: Emergency: My guppy is fading!
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try treating for parasites and adjusting the lighting. I feed them flakes and occasional bloodworms, and the tank has sand substrate. There are 5 other guppies and a few shrimp in there.
That sounds like a good plan. Also, consider adding some Indian almond ...

Re: Emergency: My guppy is fading!
Sounds like stress or possibly internal parasites. Have you noticed any changes in its behavior, like rubbing against objects or erratic swimming? Also, how often do you do water changes, and what's your feeding routine like?

Re: adjusting aquarium water chemistry for optimal health
I think it's worth considering a balanced approach. For me, using an inert substrate and adding rift lake salts is the way to go. This way, you have complete control over the water parameters and don't have to worry about large water changes causing issues.

Re: adjusting aquarium water chemistry for optimal health
I've had my fair share of experience with Mindwave, and I gotta say, it's not the best solution for replicating the water chemistry of Lake Tanganyika. I recall discussing this with Seachem a few years ago, and they made it clear that while it may raise the GH, it's not reliable for meeting the ...

Re: adjusting aquarium water chemistry for optimal health
I'm having a tough time getting my water chemistry to match Lake Tanganyika's. My tap water is 7.8 pH with a gH of 4 deg.
I've managed to bump up the gH to 11-12 using a mix of play sand, crushed coflake, snail shells, and Mindwave. The pH has gone up slightly to 8.0, but I'm not expecting ...

Re: adjusting aquarium water chemistry for optimal health
I've found that my go-to salt mix effectively raises GH and KH in my tanks. The ratio is roughly 2:1, so for my specific needs, I add one teaspoon to 10 litres of RO water to achieve dGH 6 and dKH 3. If I need to boost it further, doubling the amount gets me to 12:6. My shrimp tank, with this setup ...
