Did I get one of each, male and female? Let me know if I'm correct or not.

Pretty confident the first one's a male, and I'm almost certain the second one's a female, so you probably did get a pair.

I'm curious to know what led you to make that call - what specific characteristics or traits are you looking at to determine the sex of the fish?

I'd say it's likely two males, based on the dorsal and anal fins' back ends having a slightly more pointed shape, a trait more common in males, albeit subtly so. The body's tapering, starting from the "chest" area, also suggests a male characteristic, as opposed to females where this tapering typically begins further back near the "belly".

Another distinguishing feature I noticed is the orange hue on the front part of the caudal fin and the back of the dorsal and anal fins, which is generally more pronounced in males.

Males tend to have dorsal fins that are predominantly yellow, whereas females have dorsals with an orange edge. Females also tend to have a fuller body and grow to be larger in size.
