my lfs has these tiny black sea horses, they're only like 1.5 inches tall. would keeping one in a 1 gallon tank be alright

I'd say you're looking at a minimum of 20-25 gallons for a single pair of those little guys, otherwise it's gonna be tough to keep them happy and healthy.

friends and some bloggers online told me it's doable, but honestly, I'm expecting it to be super tough.

Honestly, I think "hard" doesn't quite cut it - keeping a creature that can grow up to 6-8 inches long in a tiny 1 gallon tank is more like cruel. I mean, think about it, that's just not giving the poor thing the space it needs to thrive. As for me, I'm not convinced there's really anything that can be kept long-term in a 1 gallon tank, at least when it comes to fish.
