I'm setting up a new 20 gallon tank and wanna do it right this time. Got any suggestions for substrate and plants that'll keep the water clean? Last time my Nitrates spiked like crazy.

For a 20 gallon, I'd go with a mix of sand and gravel. Sand looks slick and gives a natural vibe, but gravel helps with filtration. Plants like Anubias and Java Fern are solid choices, they're low maintenance and help with Nitrates. What kinda filter you running?

Sand is fine but can compact. If you go that route, stir it weekly. Also, floating plants like Frogbit suck up Nitrates fast. Just don't let 'em take over the surface.

I've got a HOB filter, but thinking of adding a sponge filter too. You think that's overkill?

Nah, doubling up on filtration is smart, especially if you're gonna stock heavy. Sponge filters are great for bio filtration and gentle flow. Just make sure you're not creating too much current for the plants.

Agreed. Sponge filters are chill and give you backup bio media. Also, if you're worried about Nitrates, up your water changes to weekly, 25%. It's boring but works.

Yep, consistency is key. Test your water before changes to see if you can stretch it to 10 days once things stabilize.
