Thinking about switching my 55 gallon from a community tank to a species-only setup. Anyone got experience with this? Currently have Tetras, Corys, and a Gourami, but wanna focus on Discus. Worried about the transition.

Discus are stunning but need pristine water. What's your current filtration? They're gonna demand more frequent water changes, like 30% twice a week. Also, temp should be around 82-86°F. Got a heater that can handle that?

I've kept Discus for years. They're not as fragile as folks say, but you gotta stay on top of water quality. What's your tap water like? They prefer softer water, so might need RO if yours is hard.

Agreed on the water changes. I'd also recommend a canister filter for better bio filtration. What substrate are you using? Bare bottom is easier to keep clean for Discus.

Thanks for the tips. Running a Fluval 307 canister, and my tap is moderately hard. I've got sand substrate now but can switch to bare bottom. Heater's an Eheim Jager, so temp should be fine. How about tankmates? Heard they're picky.

Discus can be chill with certain tankmates. I've had success with Cardinal Tetras and Sterbai Corys. Just avoid anything nippy or too active. Also, they're social, so aim for at least 6 to spread aggression.

Bare bottom is the way to go. Easier to clean and monitor waste. What's your feeding plan? They need high-protein food, like beef heart mix or quality pellets. Gonna need to feed multiple times a day.

Man, Discus sound high-maintenance. Why not just stick with Gouramis? They're way easier and still look cool. But if you're set on it, good luck! Maybe start with juveniles to get the hang of it.

Transitioning slowly is key. Maybe move the current fish out over a few weeks while ramping up water changes. Also, test your water daily at first to catch any spikes. Got a liquid test kit?

Nah, Discus are worth the effort if you're into 'em. Just gotta be ready for the commitment. Juveniles are a good call, though—cheaper and you can grow 'em out.
