My dwarf hairgrass isn't spreading like it should. I've got a 20 gallon tank with Fluval Stratum substrate, CO2 injection, and a Nicrew light on for 8 hours a day. What am I missing?

Dwarf hairgrass can be finicky if the lighting isn't strong enough. That Nicrew might not cut it, gonna need at least 30 PAR for decent carpeting. Also, how's your nutrient dosing? You running any macros?

I had the same issue until I switched to a finer substrate. The Fluval Stratum might be too coarse for the roots to spread easily. Try mixing in some sand or switching to ADA Amazonia.

Yep, lighting's key. I'd also check your CO2 levels, aim for 20-30 ppm. If it's too low, the hairgrass just chills without growing.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look into upgrading the light and check my CO2 levels. Appreciate the help!

No prob! Also, if you're not already, dose some iron. Hairgrass loves it, and it'll green up real nice. Just don't go overboard, or you'll get algae.

Another thing to consider is your water flow. If it's too strong, the hairgrass might struggle to anchor. Try adjusting your filter output or adding a sponge to diffuse the current.

Good point. I've seen hairgrass melt when the flow's too aggressive. A gentler current helps it settle in.

And don't forget to trim it once it starts growing. Cutting it low encourages lateral spread. Just don't go too crazy, or you'll stress it out.
