How Do You Handle Plant Overgrowth?

My tank's got a serious overgrowth problem, mostly with Java Fern and Anubias. They're taking over the hardscape and blocking light for other plants. What's your go-to method for keeping them in check without harming the tank balance?

I've found that regular trimming is key. For Java Fern, cut the older leaves at the base to encourage new growth. Anubias can be divided by splitting the rhizome. Make sure your lighting isn't too intense, as that can accelerate their spread. What's your tank size and lighting setup?

Agreed with Sprig on trimming. I also recommend adjusting your fertilization routine. Overfeeding nutrients can cause explosive growth. Are you using CO2? If so, reducing it slightly might help slow things down without stressing the plants.

Haha, my tank looks like a jungle too! I just let it go wild and my fish love it. But if you wanna tidy up, maybe get some snails or shrimp to nibble on the extra bits. They're like little lawnmowers!

I'm with Sprig and zenith on this. Trim and adjust ferts. Also, consider relocating some plants to other tanks or trading them. Overgrown Java Fern is a hot commodity in my local group.

Yep, trimming's the way to go. I'd add that you should sterilize your scissors between cuts to avoid spreading any potential algae or bacteria.

I'm new to this, but my buddy told me to just pull out the extra plants. Is that bad? They grow back so fast anyway.

Pulling can work, but it's messy and might disturb your substrate. Trimming's cleaner. Also, if you're gonna pull, do it during a water change to minimize the mess.

I've had success with reducing light duration. Dropped from 10 to 6 hours and the growth slowed way down. Just make sure your other plants can handle the change.

Overgrowth is often a sign of imbalance. Check your nitrate levels. If they're high, more frequent water changes might help. Also, what's your tank's current plant-to-fish ratio? Too many plants can mess with oxygen levels at night.
