What's the best way to clean a betta tank without stressing them out? I've got a 5-gallon with a sponge filter, and my fish seems to freak out every time I try to vacuum the substrate.

I've found that smaller, more frequent water changes help. Instead of doing a big clean, try siphoning just 10-20% of the water every few days. Use a gentle gravel vacuum and avoid getting too close to their favorite hiding spots.

Totally agree with jubilant. Also, make sure the water you're adding back is the same temp as the tank. Sudden temp changes can stress them more than the cleaning itself. I use a digital thermometer to double-check.

That's solid advice. I'd add that turning off the filter during cleaning can reduce noise stress, but don't leave it off for more than 10-15 minutes.

My betta used to hide for hours after cleaning, but I started feeding him right after. Now he associates cleaning with food and swims around curiously instead of hiding. Maybe try that?

What kind of substrate are you using? Sand is easier to clean than gravel, and it's less likely to trap debris. I switched last year and my tank stays cleaner longer.

Exactly! Consistency is key. I also recommend using a water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine and chloramines. Seachem Prime is my go-to.

Dude, I feel you. My betta used to bolt every time I grabbed the siphon. Now I do tiny water changes while he's distracted by food. Works like a charm.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone. I'll try smaller changes and the feeding trick. Appreciate it!

I've heard some people use a turkey baster for spot cleaning. Less intimidating than a big siphon, and you can target specific dirty areas.
