I'm setting up a new 20 gallon tank and wanna keep it low maintenance. Heard Java Fern and Crypts are good beginner plants, but which one's easier to handle? My light's a basic LED, no CO2, and I do weekly water changes.

Java Fern's pretty chill. It doesn't need much light, and you can just tie it to driftwood or rocks. Crypts can melt if you mess with them too much, but they bounce back if you're patient.

Crypts are hardy once established, but they're sensitive to changes in water parameters. If you're consistent with your tank maintenance, they'll thrive. Java Fern is more forgiving if you're still figuring things out.

Crypts melt like it's their job, but Java Fern just vibes. Unless you're into dramatic plant behavior, stick with Java Fern. Plus, it's harder to kill than my will to live after a Monday.

I've had both in my 30 gallon. Java Fern grows slower but stays steady. Crypts can look rough after a water change or if you move them, but they'll recover if you leave them alone.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Sounds like Java Fern might be the way to go for my setup. Appreciate the advice!

Java Fern's a solid choice, especially if you're just starting out. It's tough as nails and doesn't need fancy stuff to grow. Crypts can be rewarding, but they're a bit more finicky.

Crypts are great if you want a carpeting effect, but Java Fern's better for attaching to hardscape. Depends on what look you're going for, really.

Java Fern is easier to manage overall. It doesn't require substrate planting, so you can move it around without stressing the plant. Crypts need a bit more stability in their environment.

I've killed more Crypts than I care to admit. Java Fern's been way more forgiving in my tanks. If you're new, go with the Fern.
