I recently got a new red fungia, it's been doing great on the sand for about 3 weeks, eating well and all. I've got a spot open on my base rock, about an inch high from the sand bed. I'm thinking of moving the fungia to the rock, would that be okay? I know it's still happy now, but I'm wondering if fungia really need to be on sand.

I wouldn't risk it, personally. Fungias are notorious for moving around, and I've seen them fall off rockwork before - once they're damaged, recovery's tough. They also expand and contract a lot, which can cause friction on the rock, leading to tissue damage over time.

Besides having it on the sandbed, strong lighting a must? And should it be kept away from other corals, or is that not a concern?

They do have stinging cells but their reach is relatively short, no long sweeper tentacles like some other corals, so you don't need to worry about giving them a huge amount of space.
