discus breeding tank dividers
discus breeding tank dividers
Has anyone tried using tank dividers for breeding Discus? I've got a 75 gallon with six adults, and I'm thinking of splitting it to let two pairs spawn without the others messing with them. The dividers are mesh, so water flows through, but I'm worried about stress. My tank's at 84°F, pH 6.5, and I do 30% water changes twice a week. Substrate is bare bottom, and I feed beef heart mix daily. Any tips?

Mesh dividers can work, but it's sketchy if the fish can still see each other. I tried it in my 55 gallon, and the males kept flaring. Ended up removing it after a week. My water's similar, 83°F, pH 6.4, with a sponge filter and driftwood. Maybe try solid dividers if you're gonna keep 'em split long-term.

I agree. Solid dividers are better for reducing aggression. I've used acrylic ones in my 90 gallon, and the pairs spawned within a week. Water params were 85°F, pH 6.3, with a canister filter and weekly 40% changes. Just make sure the dividers are snug so no one slips through.Lyn wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 3:43 am Mesh dividers can work, but it's sketchy if the fish can still see each other. Thanks for the advice. I'll switch to solid dividers and see how it goes. My canister filter's an FX4, and I've got some Java ferns tied to driftwood. Hopefully, the pairs will chill once they can't see each other.

Yep, solid dividers cut the weird vibe. My Discus are way less stressed now. I've got a 60 gallon with a HOB filter, temp at 82°F, and pH 6.6. Feeding them frozen bloodworms twice a day. Let us know how it works out.

Another thing to watch is the water flow. If the dividers block too much, you might get dead spots. I added a small powerhead in my 90 gallon to keep circulation even. Temp's steady at 84°F, pH 6.4, and I use RO water with a bit of mineral buffer. The pairs have spawned three times since I switched to solid dividers.
