I've got an Acan Lordhowensis on a frag plug at the bottom of my tank, just sitting on the substrate. It's getting bigger and adding more heads, which is great, but I'm wondering if I should glue the frag plug to a rock to help it spread out more. Would it just keep growing and spreading on its own without the rock, or does it need that extra support? I've got the same question for my Bflintix9to - does it need a rock as a base to thrive? Right now it's growing and taking on this round, bushy shape.

From what I've learned about these species, I think the substrate can cause issues for the new heads as they grow. I personally attach my plugs to a piece of rubble using putty - this way, I can easily remove the rubble if I need to relocate it.

I've placed all my acans on the rocks, just seems like the best fit for my tank. Don't really know if the sandbed would be any different, just never tried it. One thing to keep in mind, over time they'll fuse with the rock they're on. I learned that the hard way, putting mine on a big, flat base rock with an arch - it's a huge piece, looks great, but now they're basically part of it.

I really appreciate the advice. After reading through your responses, I decided to glue and putty three frag plugs together and then placed the original one on top. This setup seems to be working out well and the coral looks more spread out now, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I still wanted to keep it on the bottom of the tank, and so far, it's looking great.
