Growing and caring for java fern

I picked up a Java fern from my local fish store, it was attached to some big piece of wood or rock, I'm not really sure which one, and when I put it in my tank it just didn't look as vibrant as it did in the store. The leaves are kinda brown and not as green as I expected, is this normal or is something going on with it?

That's how Java ferns usually look, pretty normal.

Honestly, the Java fern does look a bit worn out. Many pet store plants aren't in the best shape, which is why I've started buying online - it's just easier. The fern in your photo isn't perfect, but I notice new growth under the older leaves, which is a good sign. I'd suggest trimming off the worst-affected leaves and leaving the healthy ones intact. With proper care, it should regain its vibrant green color. Some browning on the tips is normal, just a sign of aging, so that's not a concern.

I've got to agree with darklord's advice, it's spot on. Another thing to consider is that the shop might have had the Java fern under different lighting, maybe a spectrum that brings out the green in plants, which could be why it looked healthier when you bought it.

I've found that Java ferns often go through an adjustment phase when introduced to a new tank. Pruning the brown leaves and giving the healthy ones space to grow usually does the trick. Once it settles in, the plant should recover nicely. I'd also recommend adding a fertilizer like Aquarium Co Op's Easy Green - it made a big difference for my Java ferns.
