Elegance corals dying, what's going wrong

Hey RC, long time no post but I need your expertise now. I'm thinking of rescuing an elegance coral from a fellow reefer's tank that's getting too small for it. The issue is, it scratched itself on the rocks when it extended and then those hermit crabs went to town on the wound. I've got pics from flintix9t's night of the damage - I told the owner to put it in a protective container in the tank to keep the hermits off. Can this coral be saved? If so, what's the best way to go about it? Should I frag off the damaged part?

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated
