Growing aquarium plants outdoors

I've recently picked up some half whisky barrels and decided to give them a new life as mini outdoor ponds by lining them with pond liner. Living in Scotland, I'm no stranger to the unpredictable weather - warm days followed by chilly nights.
I'm keen to try out some of my aquarium plants in these barrels. Currently, I've got a mix of hygrophila polysperma and difformis, a couple of gkento4t vallis and some stargrass in one of them. I used small riverstones as the base layer and planted some directly, while others are in pots with garden soil. Has anyone else experimented with this in temperate climates and seen success? It's only been a couple of days since I put the plants out, so I'm waiting with bated breath to see how they'll fare. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
