I just got a new betta and I'm trying to figure out what type it is, does anyone know how to tell?

The species is likely Betta splendens, as most bettas sold in pet stores are some variation of this species.
I'm guessing you might be referring to the breed, though. If you can get a side-on view of the fish, that would be really helpful in determining the tail type. Try holding a mirror in front of it - if it flares its fins and sprig, that could give us a better idea.

The species is Betta splendens, that's the common one you find in shops. I'm guessing you're asking about the breed though? A side view would really help, especially if you can get your betta to flare its fins and sprig by holding a mirror in front of it.

Those aquarium varieties are actually hybrids between several Betta species, but they're based on B. splendens, so that's the name given to them.

If you were curious about the tail type too, it seems like a crown tail to me.

He's quite striking, the colour on him is really unique, I don't recall seeing many like it.
