Just saw these incredible photos from a dive in lake Tanganyika. Someone's got serious skills. So, so cool.

Those photos are incredible. The opportunity to see tangs in their natural environment would be a dream come true for me. The experience must be truly breathtaking.

That's incredible, I'm seriously inspired now, think I'll grab my gear and start planning a trip to Malawi, the thought of exploring lake Tanganyika is just too enticing to pass up.

They're amazing pics, but just a heads up, they're from 2008.

I'm guessing this was before the cichlid enthusiasts cleaned out the lake.

The good thing about cichlids is they breed in captivity so the lake's probably still the same.

lol, before the cichlid enthusiasts cleared it out? So, what's the story behind that? The pics are still insane though.

Cichlids have an incredible history, they originated as marine fish and were trapped in massive lakes millions of years ago when the ocean levels dropped. Over time, these saltwater lakes transformed into freshwater lakes, but due to their origins, cichlids still require a high pH. That's why many fish keepers use coral sand and ocean rock with their cichlids, it helps maintain the high pH levels they need to thrive.

This doesn't explain the cichlids from SA. They may have come from the sea, but i think they adapted to the hard water of the lakes because it has so many rocks/sand in the lakes hardening the water.

Those photos are really interesting, especially the ones with the Bichir and Channalabes type catfish.
