Mysterious trumpet coral head loss

All,
I've got a trumpet coral with over 30 heads that's been thriving. The other night it got knocked off the rock work and ended up in the sand. Next day, I noticed this one section looked like it had some exposed flesh. Now, all three heads on that section are dead.
I'm thinking the fall might've damaged that area, leading to an infection.
Should I just leave it alone and see if it recovers, or cut out the affected section to prevent anything from spreading?
Any advice would be great - I'm still pretty new to keeping trumpet coral.
Thanks,
Ryan
