Upgrading my multifasciatus from their 10 gallon to a 20 gallon long soon - they've been breeding like crazy and I think the extra space will be a big help.

Considering adding a top dweller from Lake Tanganyika, maybe a single or a pair - any suggestions? Would a species like Cyprichromis or Paracyprichromis work, or should I just keep it multifasciatus-only despite the bigger tank?

Most cichlids from the African rift lakes are indeed bottom dwellers, which limits our options for top dwellers. However, there are a couple of species that could work well in your 20-gallon long tank.

For instance, you could consider Cyprichromis or Paracyprichthys. Both of these are open-water swimmers, and while they do require a group to thrive, their slender build and moderate appetite might make them a suitable choice. They only grow up to 4 inches, which is relatively modest.

Another option to consider would be Lamprichthys tanganicanus.

Thanks coltin, I just did some research on those species and I think I'd need a 20 gallon high to keep them with my shellies. Since I already have the 20 gallon long, I guess I'll just stick with a species-only tank. I have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed - I was really looking forward to keeping some Tanganyikan Killifish.
