choosing a gender

Hi everyone, I've recently brought home a beautiful little Betta. I'm having a bit of a mystery on my hands - they were labeled as a male yellow halfmoon at the pet store, but I'm really struggling to determine their sex. I've taken a close look, but I just can't seem to spot an egg spot... and to be honest, I've never had a short-finned male before, although I know they do exist. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? I'd really appreciate any help I can get.

Honestly, I'm no expert, but to me, it seems like it might be a female.

Try getting the betta to flare by showing it its reflection in a mirror. If you can, take a closer look at the Sprig. If the points only stick out at the sides, it's likely a female. If they also stick out under the head, sort of like a beard, that's usually a male.
