Finding suitable tank mates for a betta in a 5-gallon aquarium

I think I've got the right spot for this question.

I've had my betta for a month now, and things have been going great. I had a mystery snail with him at first, but after I saw him nip the snail's antennae, I knew it was time to rehome the snail - he was really stressed out after the fish was added, so I took him to my local fish store.

Now I'm wondering if I can add something else to the tank. I know 5 gallons is too small for any other fish, but I'm curious about shrimp or a different type of snail - would either of those work? Any advice would be really helpful, thanks.

Given his behavior with the mystery snail, I'd advise against introducing any other tank mates. He's shown aggression, and it's best not to risk stressing him or any potential new additions.

Bettas are naturally solitary creatures, they're not exactly thrilled about sharing their space. He seems a bit of a grump, to be honest - can't even tolerate a snail. Save yourself the hassle and let him be the king of his castle, no need to throw in other tank mates.

I'm with barnicle on this one. I had a similar experience, my betta was cool with a mystery snail but my cherry shrimp didn't stand a chance.

I'm not exactly a betta expert, but I do have a question that's slightly off topic - what about plants in the tank? Specifically, do you have any floating plants that your betta might enjoy? And, as others have already mentioned, I'd definitely advise against adding any other fish, especially shrimp.

I completely agree with the advice given so far. With a solitary species like betta in a five-gallon tank, it's generally not a good idea to add other tank mates, especially fish. Shrimp and snails are usually the only options, but as you've seen with your betta, even those can be a problem. Since he nipped at the snail, it's clear he doesn't want to share his space.

A five-gallon tank is perfect for a single betta, so focus on making it a great environment for him. Consider adding some live plants, a betta hammock, or Indian Almond leaves to make the tank more interesting and improve the water quality. These additions will give him plenty of places to rest and hide.

It's best to resist the urge to add other tank mates, as it often doesn't work out well. Your betta has made it clear he's a solitary animal and prefers to be alone. If you're interested in keeping other fish or creatures, you'll need to set up a separate tank. We'd be happy to advise you on that if you decide to go that route. This is often how people in the hobby end up with multiple tanks, so consider yourself warned!

I have some frog bit floating on the surface of the tank.
