Title's got me wondering, should I be worried. Just got my hands on a redhead fairy wrasse - he's absolutely stunning. There's this white lump on his lip though, and it's got me a bit concerned.

Only saw him for the first time tonight since I brought him home on Sunday. He doesn't seem too fussed about it, but I'm a bit uneasy. Any ideas what it could be?

He was at the local fish store for a while before I picked him up, so I'm not sure if that's a factor. To be honest, I didn't really notice it when I was checking him out in the shop - the tank was pretty high up, so it was hard to get a good look.

he seemed fine in the shop, didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. possibly a mouth fungus, had a similar issue with my clowns, used melafix and it cleared up in 3 days.

How do you administer melafix to your clowns, was it just a matter of adding it to the tank or did you do a separate treatment?

I just dose the tank with melafix, turn off or remove the skimmers and carbon, then treat for 7 days - the dose depends on tank size, I think it's 5ml per 40 litres, so just follow the instructions for that.

Isn't tea tree oil similar to melafix? I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. What about using it with inverts, would that be safe?

its basically tea tree oil, extract of it anyway. as far as i know its reef safe, seems like a natural remedy so didnt cause any issues in mine.

I've used Melafix before, had great results.

It's reef safe and worth trying in this case. Just remember to switch off that skimmer and take out the carbon while you're treating the tank.

I'm thinking of giving Melafix a go, but I've got a pretty big tank with a sump, so I'd need to dose it up. Would you recommend turning the sump off during treatment as well? That might make things a bit easier.

Do I need to remove the carbon and turn off the skimmer in the sump too?

Shibby, got any Melafix lying around at your place, or maybe some leftover I could borrow?

Leave the sump running, just stop the skimmer and activated carbon, that way the treatment can do its thing.

We've got heaps of it, get a big bottle, it's really useful stuff, my little bottle treated a massive 890 litres of water, so a big one will be good for thousands of litres.
