Hey everyone, I'm back after a while of just browsing. I've been thinking about getting a rescue betta and I'm looking to learn more about their food. I've got a decent idea of what I'm doing, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

I currently rotate two kinds of pellets for my betta and give them a freeze-dried bloodworm once a week. I'm looking for ways to improve their diet, so I'd love to hear about what you guys feed your bettas.

I've read through a bunch of threads and I've got a few things I want to clarify. Frozen bloodworms - I've heard they're not the best for bettas and some people's bettas even develop an allergy to them. Fluval Bug Bites - I've heard great things about these, what kind do you guys get and how often do you feed them? And what about quality pellets - are there any brands you recommend?

Also, just a side note - I do fast my betta for two days a week. Thanks in advance for your help!

Bug Bites are always a solid choice, they also come in small pellet form, which is convenient. In my experience, frozen foods are a better option than freeze-dried ones. Brine shrimp and mosquito larvae, in particular, are very nutritious for bettas. I find that cutting a small piece off a frozen cube and defrosting it in a little container with some tank water works well.

Thanks barnicle, I'll definitely look into frozen foods, specifically brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. I've heard they're really nutritious for bettas. I like the idea of cutting a small bit off a cube and defrosting it in a little receptacle with tank water, that's a great tip.

I've found a great alternative to traditional betta food - live wingless fruit flies that you can culture yourself. It's surprisingly simple and easy to do, with virtually no mess involved. I'd recommend checking out The Fruitfly Shop in San Diego for more information.

And how often do you feed frozen brine shrimp, barnicle?

I've been experimenting with a mix of things, so I rotate between live wingless fruit flies that I culture at home and a high-quality color flake. I also give my betta frozen brine shrimp as a treat once a week, I think it's a great way to add some variety to their diet.

I just wanted to add that Fluval also has a flake version of Bug Bites, which is another option. They also make a betta formula pellet, which I think is designed to sink slower in the water.

I usually give my betta a mix of foods - mostly Tetra bettamin worm shaped bites, and I also give frozen brine shrimp once a week to all my fish, including my betta.

I'm absolutely loving these foods for my aquarium crew. My bettas, shrimp, and tetras just devour them. Years of using them and I'm still impressed. The protein content is really high, which I think is great for my fish. As a special treat, I give my bettas bloodworms once or twice a week, but I like to make them work for it.
