I feel terrible for those bettas, they're such stunning creatures and yet they're stuck in those tiny cups. I was taken aback when I saw koi bettas at Petco - it was quite a surprise.

It's just as bad passing the animal section in general - all those poor creatures stuck in small spaces.

Why the surprise, really. Betta fish, especially the fancy ones like canvas, multicoloured, and those trendy koi types, are super popular. They sell millions every year, and sadly, millions don't make it.

You see, these fancy canvas bettas, the ones with all the colours, they've got the marble gene. It's what makes them change colours and patterns, but that doesn't happen till they're a bit older, around 6 to 12 months. Thing is, they're sold when they're just 3-4 months old...

i'm used to seeing single colored veiltails or crowntails at my petco, so the koi bettas caught me off guard.

I'm curious, what's the breed of the second betta in the pics? It's really pretty.

I think that second one in the pictures is actually a Galaxy Koi betta, they're really pretty.

I'm not entirely sure, but it looks like a canvas type to me - possibly a nemo, koi, or maybe even a fancy or candy, though the pic is pretty dark and blurry, making it hard to tell.

Thanks so much, it's really stunning. I recently came across a male blood red betta at Petco, it was even labeled as new. I have to admit, I was completely drawn to it and couldn't look away. Now I'm in the process of setting up a tank and gathering all the necessary information.
