Feeding mbuna with bloodworms

My main staple for the Mbuna tank is Spirulina flakes, supplemented with algae sinking pellets for the catfish.

Every other week, I like to mix it up a bit - I'll give them a small serving of either bloodworm or brine shrimp in the morning, just before a water change. Then, I'll skip feeding for the rest of the day. It's my way of adding some variety to their diet, along with the occasional treat like sliced cucumber.

I've come across some articles suggesting that Mbuna can be sensitive to bloodworm, which may cause bloat. I'm wondering, would feeding a small amount every now and then be a concern in this case?

No issues with the occasional bloodworm treat. Your Mbuna seem well cared for.

Bloodworm isn't fine for Malawis, you're right. I read that too, and I'm surprised bolt9x didn't. Maybe bolt9x should brush up on their knowledge before giving advice.

Brine shrimp is fine, from what I've read. I've come across multiple articles suggesting that worms, any type, can cause bloat in Malawis.

The OP only gives it to them once every 2 weeks, it's not their main staple. I don't see a problem with that. The amount is negligible, it's not like they're feeding it to them daily. Maybe you should read the whole first post before jumping to conclusions.

Thanks for the input everyone - much appreciated. I think I'll just stick with what I'm doing, seems to be working fine so far.

Rifty made a valid point about the bloodworm, however I alternate it with brine shrimp, so it's only fed every four weeks in our case. I don't think it would cause any issues, my lot have always been fine with it.

Do you keep malawis? I'm curious since you seem so casual about bloodworm. I've read that it's a no-go for these fish due to their super long digestive system - it can cause some serious issues. Every expert I've come across advises against it, saying it's just not necessary in their diet. So, why take the risk, right?

I keep malawis, and they've been fine with the occasional bloodworm. I agreed with rivora8's approach because it's worked for me. Sorry if you disagree.

risking something that's not necessary to the fish, which might cause issues, tho?
