Do hammer corals sting each other?

I set up this little experiment, putting a smaller hammer right next to a bigger one - their "arms" were basically touching. Within a couple of days, one side of the smaller hammer just started shrinking, sucked back into its skeleton. Then, before I knew it, the whole thing had retreated inside and basically disintegrated. Now it's dead. I'm wondering, was it because the bigger hammer stung it or was it just a weak hammer that died for no reason?

Different scenario. My four are thriving, two wall, two branched, all intertwined.

I've got a similar setup, two branching ones next to a frogspawn and they're all intertwined. They're all doing great, no issues at all. I just took a pic of them recently.

My experience is that hammers and frogs get along just fine. However, torches are a different story - they require a lot of space and should be kept far away from everything else.
