Eliminating cyanobacteria

I spent ages researching online and finally found a product that claimed to get rid of cyanobacteria without harming my fish or plants. Trouble was, I had to get it shipped from the USA as I couldn't find a UK supplier. I'd been trying to keep it under control by siphoning off as much as I could, but it was a constant battle - I'd clear it up one day, and it'd be back the next. So I took the plunge and ordered the UltraLife Blue-green slime stain remover. It took about 8 days to arrive, and after dosing it, I watched as the cyanobacteria vanished over the next 3 days.

Loads of the reviews I read said that not only did it get rid of the cyanobacteria, but it also prevented it from coming back. Fingers crossed that's the case here. So far, I'm really pleased with the results. My fish didn't bat an eyelid when I added it, and my plants are growing much faster now they're not covered in gunk.

Glad to hear you found a solution that works. I've had limited success with a similar product, EasyLife's Blue/Green Exit, but I think the location of the cyanobacteria in my tank makes it a tougher problem to tackle - it's stubbornly stuck between the glass and the substrate.

Is this the product?

Looks like a supplement that promotes good bacteria over the bad stuff. End result is lower nutrient levels, starving the algae. Might be worth a shot. Couldn't find the ingredients, though - not listed on the MSDS.

Glad you found a solution that worked for you. I, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky with the easylife product I tried - blue/green exit, I think it was called. Problem is, the cyanobacteria in my tank is stuck between the glass and the substrate, making it a real challenge to get rid of. I'm not sure even your product would be effective in this case, since it seems to be a fine particle that settles on plants.

Not much to add, just thought I'd share a before and after of my tank.

That plant in your before and after pics, hillsman, really catches my eye. Good to know about the treatment, I've had my own battles with cyanobacteria on floating plants a couple of years back. I just kept pulling out the affected bits and eventually got rid of it all. Now I've got some stuck between the glass and the substrate, it's a right pain. Won't be using this treatment for that, though - I know it won't work for that type.

I'm intrigued by that plant, hillsman - it's really caught my eye. I've had my own share of experience with cyanobacteria on my floating plants a couple of years ago. I managed to get rid of it by regularly pulling out the affected bits and removing the infected plants.

As for the plant, I'm not entirely sure what it is, to be honest. I picked it up as part of a job lot on Ebay, but after some research, I think it might be Lymnophilla aromatica - it's a pretty plant, isn't it? It's been growing well, so I decided to propagate it by cutting the tops off a couple of plants and planting them in the gravel. Hopefully, someone might be able to identify it from the picture.

To be honest, it does bear some resemblance, but it's missing that distinctive red hue.
