Comparing hornwort and coontail growth rates

I'm still in shock, my brown thumb is infamous for killing even the hardiest aquarium plants - I mean, I've managed to kill duckweed, for crying out loud. But somehow, I've managed to keep my hornwort alive and thriving. I've taken these pics just 4 days apart, and the growth is insane - we're talking over an inch a day! I've heard hornwort can grow fast, but this is on a whole different level.

Mine's doing the same thing - it's like I can almost see it growing right before my eyes. Your hornwort looks amazing, by the way, really thriving.

That's a relief to hear. I'm not a huge fan of the way it looks, but I'm aiming for a jungle tank vibe with live plants. I think I'll need to pick up a terrac pot or two for the right side, though. Problem is, nobody local has any in stock except this one thrift store that's asking an outrageous $4 per pot - and they're used, to boot.

I'm glad to hear that my hornwort is on the right track. Aesthetically, it's not my top choice, but I'm dead set on creating a jungle tank with live plants - it's the look I'm going for.
I've also been thinking about adding a couple of terrac pots to the right side of the tank. Unfortunately, they're nowhere to be found locally, except at the thrift store, which is trying to pass off used 4" pots for $4 each. That's just outrageous. I mean, I've seen them going for $1 each at some of the local hardware stores, and even the aquarium store sells them for $5 each. Hopefully, my local store will restock soon and I won't have to break the bank for something so simple.

I threw some hornwort in my 55 gallon tetra tank to help absorb ammonia during my gravel-to-sand switch and after adding 22 neon tetra. It's taking off pretty quickly. I'm with kindness on the aesthetics, not my top choice, but it's getting the job done.

I've had an instance where a female guppy got a strand of hornwort stuck through one of her fins - I'm still not sure how it happened. I had to carefully remove it using tweezers in a shallow cup. Thankfully, none of my other fish have had any issues with it, and my betta actually seems to enjoy resting on the floating tangle at the top of the tank.

@bigtop I can imagine how frustrating that must've been for you and the poor guppy. I've been worried about something like that happening in my tank too. Our betta seems to prefer the hornwort over the artificial plants we had before, which is a relief since I was more concerned about those.
I've actually moved some floating hornwort from the guppy tank to the cichlid tank and so far, it's been left alone as long as it's floating. I'm a bit surprised the fry haven't shown much interest in it yet.

@bigtop Ouch, I can imagine how stressful that must've been for you and the poor guppy. I've had similar concerns, but our betta seems to be enjoying the hornwort way more than the artificial plants we had before. Those fake plants were a bigger worry for me, to be honest.
I transferred some floating hornwort from the guppy tank to the cichlid tank, and so far, the cichlids are leaving it alone as long as it's floating. I'm a bit surprised the fry aren't curious about it, but that's a good thing, I suppose.

I've been pleasantly surprised with my hornwort - it's thriving despite my notorious brown thumb. I've even managed to keep it alive, unlike my ill-fated duckweed. The growth is staggering, with these photos taken just 4 days apart. I've heard hornwort can take over a tank quickly, but this is on a whole different level - we're talking 1"+ per day.

Great job on the hornwort, it's really taking off. Your thumb doesn't seem so brown anymore, more like a lovely olive tone. Water wisteria on the right side could be a nice touch - it'd help conceal the filter and heater. Plus, it'd be interesting to see the wisteria and hornwort grow together, competing for dominance in the middle.
