affordable substrates for large areas

I'm setting up a crawfish/crayfish breeding tub, 14ftx8ft. Planning a hiding place for them to grow and molt, plus plants they can eat. Budget's tight, $100 max. Need a cheap substrate in bulk that'll hold plants and cover at least 50 cubic feet.

You can use pea gravel from a landscape store, I've had good results with it in an aquarium setup I did to mimic a stream. I've seen crawfish in nature and they inhabit these types of environments. Play Sand is another option, it's cheap and I've been using it in all my fish tanks now. Should be safe for crawfish, but if you want something a bit larger, pea gravel's the way to go. Adding some rounded river rocks of different sizes to represent pebbles and boulders would work well with either one.

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I'm on a tight budget, so I was wondering if you have any idea how much pea gravel or play sand would cost in bulk? I need to cover at least 50 cubic feet and stay under $100.

Black Diamond blasting media's a pretty affordable option, around 8 bucks for a 50-pound sack.
